WALLS - MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE

ARCHITECTURE MUSEEUM CAFE’, STOCKHOLM, 1998, Stoneware-porcelain.

In ArkDes restaurant the walls are partly covered by unglazed tiles with deep relief. These are recessed in a plastered grey wall. Each tile is indented towards the middle, giving a three- dimensional effect.
The warm-white and matt surface of the tile is met in the centre by a coloured bottom.  The coloured bases form rows of calm and clear centre points with strong concentration.  The matt arched surfaces of the tiles give a softness and sensuality to the otherwise austere and geometric shape.
The tiles run like a broad ribbon at eye level along the walls. The matt plaster transitions into the matt tile. The surface, the arched form and the three- dimensional appearance of the tile create a still and subtle light play over the surface of the wall.

The earlier cafe’ is today converted into a restaurant and the tiled area has been extended.
