RELIEF TILES
KONRADSBERGS TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE, STOCKHOLM, 1997, Stoneware.
The artistic design at the Konradsberg teacher training college consists of eleven
tiled niches which were previously door ways. Some are completely covered in tiles,
others display tiles only along the sides. These niches are located in four corridors
that emerge on two levels from a common stairwell.
The stairwell is well preserved with all its ornamentation and stucco. The ceramic
reliefs in the niches tie in with the richly adorned stairwell and provide a more
contemporary counterpart to the stucco. The niches can be likened to a form of
bookshelves, where a series of graphic reliefs give association to stacks of books
that symbolize the collection of knowledge.
The relief tile is made from warm white stoneware and the surface is unglazed and
matt, creating a soft light over the relief. The designs are combined and coloured in
different ways, making every niche unique. When walking through the corridor the
reliefs unexpectedly appear and the rhythm and play catch your attention for a
moment.
